- Homes with pets: respond promptly to spills and accidents and consider a more frequent maintenance plan where soiling builds up faster.
- Rental turnover: assess the condition against the check-in record and the required move-out standard.

The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends professional deep cleaning every 12 to 18 months while telling owners to check the specific carpet warranty. Cormar, a UK manufacturer, says its carpets should be professionally cleaned at least once every two years under its published guarantee guidance. Those recommendations are not identical, which is exactly why your own manufacturer instructions matter.
Keep cleaning receipts and follow the care requirements for the particular fibre and construction. Some carpets and warranties have specific limits on moisture, chemicals or methods.
Clean after spills and visible soiling
Do not wait for the next planned clean after a significant spill or accident. Follow the carpet manufacturer instructions, remove solids carefully, blot rather than scrub and avoid over-wetting. If the mark is large, old or the fibre is uncertain, ask for advice before applying a product.
