Drone Cleaning vs Traditional Access Methods

There is no single conventional access method for every exterior or high-level cleaning project. Depending on the building, the options may include ground-based water-fed poles, a MEWP, rope access, a permanent BMU or cradle, scaffolding, existing safe access or drone cleaning.

The sensible choice comes from the task and the site. The building height, facade design, ground conditions, public interface, frequency of access and cleaning method all matter.

What work needs to be done?

Cleaning windows, cladding or signage is different from repairing a facade, repointing masonry or carrying out a close inspection. Drone cleaning may suit some cleaning tasks where the surface can be treated from the air. Work that needs prolonged physical contact may need a working platform, rope access or another method.

If the building already has a safe BMU, cradle, roof access system or other permanent arrangement, that existing system may be the practical starting point.

Ground-based water-fed poles

Water-fed poles and other extendable ground-based systems can be highly suitable where the surface can be reached and cleaned effectively from ground level. They can avoid putting cleaning operatives at height, which fits the first step of the HSE work at height hierarchy.

The available reach, building geometry, obstructions, water supply, wind and the required finish all need to be assessed. Ground-based systems should not be dismissed simply because a building is multi-storey.

MEWPs and powered access

A MEWP or cherry picker can provide a working platform for suitable high-level cleaning. The assessment may include working height and reach, machine access, ground bearing, setup space, pedestrian and vehicle management, operator competence, building geometry and how long the platform is needed.

A MEWP does not automatically require a road closure. The ground setup and public interface determine what controls or permissions are needed for the particular site.

Rope access

Rope access is a specialist method that can suit some facades and structures where suitable anchorage, rescue arrangements, competent technicians and a safe operating plan are available. It is neither universally suitable nor obsolete. The building and task determine whether it is appropriate.

BMUs, cradles and existing safe access

Some buildings have permanent building maintenance units, cradles, davits or other facade-access systems. Where the system is suitable, available and properly managed, it may be the most logical way to complete the work. The system condition, inspection status, operator competence and building management arrangements need to be checked.

Scaffolding

Scaffolding is one possible access method and remains valuable where people need a stable platform for prolonged physical work, repairs, restoration or detailed treatment. Properly designed, erected and managed scaffolding is a recognised work at height control. It should not be treated as the automatic alternative for every facade clean.

If scaffolding is already being installed for another project, using it may be more practical than arranging a separate access system. If the project is only a short cleaning operation, other methods may be worth comparing.

Drone cleaning

On suitable projects, drone cleaning can reduce or remove the need for cleaning operatives themselves to physically access difficult elevations. It does not work for every facade and does not remove aviation, equipment, weather, ground or public-interface risks.

The regulatory route depends on the aircraft, location, people on the ground and the planned operation. CAA requirements and any highway or landowner permissions still need to be assessed. A drone operation may reduce some access or setup requirements, but it does not automatically avoid a MEWP, road restriction or other site control.

We look at the building height and design, ground access, obstructions, public areas, roads and footways, required reach, duration, frequency of access, permanent systems, anchorage, cleaning method, weather and the site-specific risk assessment. If drone cleaning is not suitable, we will say so rather than force the wrong method.
